WE OUR AND US: AN ODE TO 50 YEARS OF HIP HOP + SOLIDARITY

We Our and Us is inspired by both De La Soul’s classic track Me Myself and I as well as to solidarity.

De La Soul

According to Old Time Music, “Me Myself And I” was born out of frustration. At the time, De La Soul had taken a break from touring and were dealing with criticisms from other rappers who felt they were too “soft” and not “hardcore” enough. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Posdnuos explained, “We were going through a phase where a lot of hardcore rap was out there. We weren’t a group that talked about guns or anything like that. We talked about ourselves, and that’s it.” As a result, “Me Myself And I” was written as a response to the criticism. The song is all about staying true to yourself and not changing for anyone else. It’s a message that still resonates with many people today.

Throughout the song, the MCs talk about their own experiences with self-doubt and how they overcame it. They encourage listeners to embrace their individuality and not try to fit into anyone else’s mold. The lyrics are empowering and uplifting, and they encourage listeners to love themselves for who they are.

Solidarity

From this opinion article by Laurie Lind and Jesus Trevino, we/us/ours communicates our solidarity with other communities as allies, the value that we place on being a part of a larger community that includes oppressed groups (e.g., African Americans, LGBTQI+, women), and our readiness and willingness to forge coalitions with other individuals and groups working to end oppression for everyone. “Ours” also conveys that a university, neighborhood, or activists organization is our community and we care for everyone in it.

THE SOUNDTRACK

Most of these songs are radio-friendly, but not all. This is hip-hop after all…
